Title: Newbie - quick question!
Post by: jayflnt on August 03, 2007, 04:19:02 PM
Hello, I'm new to this site. Is there a resource where I can find out all the legalities associated with Tax Sales in Alberta? (ie. a document outlining all the rules, etc.)

Also a quick question!

If I pick up a property at an Alberta tax sale, am I still responsible for paying off the debts associated with the property? Or do all liens/mortgages/etc get automatically wiped out?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Also, is there a way to see what a specific property sold for at a previous auction?

No one answered you because we have probably discussed that issue at least 10 times in prior postings, and you have obviously never read those ;D.

If you want to know what properties went for you have to check with the Municipality.  Many towns post this information on their web-sites, however, in my opinion it is irrelevant - tax sales are like slot machines, each spin has an equal chance of winning, also... if you walk away from the machine, someone else will surely take your place and begin to win, so it's a bit addictive as well as frustrating 8).

Thanks for your response.

However, I looked through the previous posts and wasn't able to find an answer to my initial question:

If I pick up a property at an Alberta tax sale, am I still responsible for paying off the debts associated with the property? Or do all liens/mortgages/etc get automatically wiped out?

The answer to this specific question is located within one of the forums. I believe the title of the specific forum is 'liens'. However, I do not want to look up the forum for you and I am sure many others on this site feel the same way. More or less, the forum explains that all mortgages and liens will be erased except for crown liens. I also believe 'Ontariotaxsales.ca' explains this in one of their FAQ's.
