Post by: jreist on August 28, 2006, 10:26:11 AM
Why do they try to sell these properties.

the property is 21.95 feet wide and 165 ft depth.. swamp with trees...it is
a small strip leftover from the division
of an old subdivision..bordered on both sides by homeowners..

Why do they try to sell these properties.

It is the only way for them to get these properties off of the books.  In many cases subdivisions are assembled and there are 'remnant' parcels.  These are usually seen as best developed in conjunction with a neighbouring property at some future point.  The developer goes off and after ten years of fighting with the neighbour to try to get the other property he gives up and walks away from his sliver of property which is useless.

The municipality then goes to tax sale - which is the only recourse - and either the idiot neighbour who was against development buys it at sale, or the Municipality ends up taking it after the sale and holds it for some future developement.  The Municipality also then has the opportunity to turn around and declare it as surplus to their needs and sell it for a buck or two - much less than the taxes owing (which they cannot do through the tax sale process).
