Title: Building a mobile home
Post by: Sasha on June 30, 2008, 08:02:29 PM
Sort of off topic, the town where I live is selling serviced lots.  Many of the homes around here are mobile homes with additions and roofs added and from the outside appear like homes (houses), a few even have second storeys.  The difference is there is no basement and many are put on a concrete slab.  There are no builders in the area and I'm not handy enough to build my own home.  Any idea where to get info. regarding mobile homes with additions and roofs (they are no longer mobile) or modular home builders in the northwestern Ontario area and what the cost would be to erect such a place?

Visit some campsites. You may bump into some guys selling their used trailer camper. Last year I saw one for $700. but I am not interested. It was good enough for what you need but I guess it is sold already. Another option is to get a prefab tool shed. They have step by step instruction how to put it together.

These people put roofs on these mobile homes, additions, second stories and then sell it and advertise it as a home.  I looked at one up for sale, gorgeous and couldn't tell from the outside or inside that it was a mobile or modular home, a cape cod style home.  On a double lot, wide home with a porch and a roof.  The outside is vinyl siding and there is no basement, mobile home is placed on a concrete slab by a crane, the homes are made in a factory and usually come in two pieces.  You're thinking what I originally thought, something like an RV or camper trailer or the kind of homes you may see on 'Trailer Park Boys'.  These aren't like those at all, they're quite nice.  Just thinking, the market doesn't move much in northwestern Ontario and people often buy lots and build themselves or buy these prefab type homes, but in Southern Ontario, where the market is always increasing, buying a lot and putting one of these up may not be such a bad idea.  I'm not kidding, if you saw one of these you wouldn't believe it was mobile or prefab home.
I've placed a couple of tax sale bids on homes in the past and overlooked many lots that are up for tax sale, perhaps I should start looking at lots as well.

Some of these modular homes do look good.  Here are some links.

Thank you 'no name newbie'.  I'll check out the links.  Someone sent me an e-mail telling me to buy a kit from a building supply store and hire a carpenter since non mobile homes are supposed to be better.  I'll have to price both and decide.  Pros and cons to both, cost, time involved if building on site versus prefabricated in a factory, materials and workmanship, basement vs. no basement etc...

I  have to admit that I Googled the info and dont have any knowledge of those companies. I was just trying to find a starting point for Sasha.  However they located in Ontario and Quebec and have interesting web sites. As I remember there are no builders in Sashas area.  Good luck.
