mining claims

Hello all,

Can anyone help me out with the Township of Gauthier sales.  I'm not sure what these mining claims are and what exactly does that mean?
Good or bad idea to bid on these?  I tried the mining claim map but find it hard to understand.  Please give me a heads up on what to expect or how to go about finding out more info.
